Iceland is full of old abandoned buildings like this one. This particular one is located near Geysir in the south of the country. I wanted to show of the barn while presenting an interesting angle and crop of the building. The foreground was somewhat of an experiment. I decided to use only very large flat brushes and palette knifes to indicate the texture of the thick winter grasses.
There is something very mysterious and often quite spooky about these old barns. I always get a sense of history and find myself imagining what kind of people lived and worked there.
For those of you interested in the process of making this painting, here is a sequence of photos taken in the process.
