I have been preparing these two paintings for a group exhibition in Ísafjörður in the last weekend in august. Ísafjörður is the largest town in the peninsula of Vestfirðir (Westfjords). Fishing has been the main industry in Ísafjörður, and the town has one of the largest fisheries in Iceland. The theme for the exhibition is the color blue, the ocean and fishing. The theme is open for interpretation but these two paintings is what I came up with.
I found this process quite interesting because it made me seek out subject matter that I would normally not have. In both paintings, my main focus was on design, color and texture. I wanted to keep the paint and brushwork loose and abstract. Every time I have broad flat surfaces in a painting, I try to think of as many ways of putting the paint down as I can, and to make a lot of variations in color and edges.
